This work challenges perspective by encouraging viewers to explore what the familiar constellations we have always admired might look like from somewhere other than Earth.
The sculpture is an 8’ square frame with pendant lights hanging from a wire grid roof in the shapes of constellations. The distance of the stars from Earth is accounted for in their three-dimensional arrangement such that, that as you walk around the structure, you can see what the constellation might look like from another part of space. Depending on their angle of approach, viewers may or may not see a recognizable pattern in the lights. When they do eventually find the right angle, it will prompt them to explore how its shape changes with perspective.
This work was shown at the 2025 Burning Man art festival, and I hope to find other venues to host it as well. Big thanks to my husband Ian, and friends Jim and Eleana for their practical support in the project.
